In 1941, a group of prisoners from the a camp of the Siberian Gulag escaped and proceeded to spend a year trekking 4000 miles across the various deserts and frozen wastes of Central Asia. They climbed the Himalayas on foot and crossed into British India, where they then separated and disappeared into the population. Now that is a fucking story.
Of course the memoir that tells the story (The Long Walk by SÅ‚awomir Rawicz) might be completely made up. Either that or it’s true, but Rawicz stole some Polish guy’s life story. You can’t make this shit up. Unless you edit a page on Wikipedia, but that would be cheating.
Anyway, they’ve made a movie version of it starring Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Saoirse Ronan, Jim Sturgess and Mark Strong among others. And it looks fantastic.
The Way Back is getting a limited release in December (presumably to qualify for awards season) and a wide release in January.
