Nielsen Reports Third Weekly Win In A Row For CBS

NEW YORK — As the fall season wrapped its third week, viewers were sticking with the tried-and-true. Veteran shows like 'NCIS,' Sunday Night Football, '60 Minutes' and top-ranked 'Dancing with the Stars' were among the week's most popular. Just two freshman series ' CBS' 'Hawaii Five-O' and 'Mike & Molly' ' cracked the Top 20 prime-time list the Nielsen Co. released Tuesday. Meanwhile, Jimmy Smits' new legal drama, 'Outlaw,' became the season's third ratings casualty (after 'Lone Star' and 'My Generation') as NBC announced it would be banished to Saturday nights for a few weeks before disappearing altogether.

CBS extended its winning streak, becoming the first network to win the first three weeks of a season in viewers, adults 18-49 and adults 25-54, since NBC accomplished that feat nearly a decade ago. CBS could claim the top five most-viewed new series, which also included 'Blue Bloods,' '(Bleep) My Dad Says' and 'The Defenders.' For the week, CBS averaged 11.9 million viewers (7.4 rating, 13 share). ABC averaged 8.8 million (5.6 rating, 10 share), NBC had 7.0 million (4.4 rating, 8 share), Fox had 6.1 million (3.6 rating, 6 share), the CW had 2.3 million (1.5 rating, 2 share) and ION Television had 1.2 million (0.8 rating, 1 share). Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with a prime-time average of 3.9 million viewers (1.9 rating, 3 share), TeleFutura had 830,000 and Telemundo had 770,000 (both 0.4 rating, 1 share), Azteca had 230,000 (0.1 rating, 0 share), and Estrella had 220,000 (0.1 rating, 0 share). NBC's 'Nightly News' topped the evening newscasts with an average of 7.5 million viewers (5.0 rating, 10 share). ABC's 'World News' was second with 7.0 million (4.7 rating, 10 share) and the 'CBS Evening News' had 5.5 million viewers (3.7 rating, 8 share). A ratings point represents 1,159,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 115.9 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show. For the week of Oct. 4-10, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: 'Dancing With the Stars,' ABC, 19.89 million; 'NCIS,' CBS, 19.81 million; NFL Football: Philadelphia at San Francisco, 16.86 million; 'Dancing With the Stars Results,' ABC, 16.70 million; 'NCIS: Los Angeles,' CBS, 16.15 million; '60 Minutes,' CBS, 15.02 million; 'The Mentalist,' CBS, 14.39 million; 'Two and a Half Men,' CBS, 14.37 million; 'Criminal Minds,' CBS, 13.87 million; 'The Good Wife,' CBS, 12.76 million.

MGM files for Chapter 11

It looks like Bond may find a new home with Spyglass and hopefully "The Hobbit" will get the green-light.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. said it has begun seeking its creditors' approval on a prepackaged bankruptcy plan in which they will exchange more than $4 billion in debt for equity in a new company that has rights to the James Bond franchise and the upcoming two-part movie series "The Hobbit."

Privately held production company Spyglass Entertainment, a co-financier of such recent films as "Star Trek" and "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra," will contribute some assets and merge two subsidiaries into MGM for a 4.69 percent stake in the company, according to the plan.

Creditors would hold 95.3 percent of the company after it exits from Chapter 11.

Only approved holders of secured debt as of Oct. 4 will be allowed to vote. The company declined to provide the list of creditors that can participate, but major creditors include Anchorage Advisors LLC, Highland Capital Management LP and billionaire investor Carl Icahn.

Voting continues until Oct. 22, when the company plans to file for bankruptcy and exit the court process in about 30 days.

After exiting bankruptcy, Spyglass co-founders Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum will serve as co-chairmen and CEOs.

The move signals the end is near for a process that began late last year as the company struggled to right itself from a dearth of hit movies, the decline of DVD sales and an overwhelming debt burden brought on by its $5 billion purchase in 2005 by a group led by Providence Equity Partners, Texas Pacific Group, Sony Corp. and Comcast Corp.

It also clears the way for production to begin on "The Hobbit," the two-part movie based on J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, which MGM is set to make with Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. The release of the first installment had been slated for December 2012 but the movie still hasn't gotten the official "green light" to begin shooting.

MGM also owns rights to the James Bond movie franchise and has a library of 4,000 movie and TV-show titles including such titles as "Rocky" and "Dances With Wolves."

By choosing bankruptcy over another sale, MGM is rejecting a $2 billion all-cash offer made last month by Indian conglomerate Sahara India Pariwar. MGM also walked away from an offer from Time Warner for $1.5 billion in cash.

Because MGM's creditors had given it a waiver on debt and interest payments since last October, the company has been able to preserve some cash. But it is unclear if it has enough to help pay for the big-budget "Hobbit" movies, or if it will need to clear the bankruptcy process first before raising new funds.

"Glee" Surpasses Beatles for Billboard Chart Record :

"Glee" has surpassed the Beatles by breaking the record for most songs on the Billboard Hot 100 by a non-solo act. The cast of the television now has six debuts on the chart this week. That gives it a total of 75 songs on the chart to the Beatles' 71. Since its debut in May 2009, the series has sold 11.5 million downloads and 2.8 million albums. Elvis Presley still leads overall with 108 songs to chart on the Hot 100. He's followed by James Brown with 91, then "Glee". The Beatles are sixth, behind Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. Elton John, Lil Wayne, Stevie Wonder and Jay-Z round out the Top 10.

Dallas Remake Coming to Television?

Hollywood has been cashing in on remakes and sequels in recent years, and now television is getting into the act. In addition to the news that Wonder Woman is returning to television comes the rumor that a Dallas remake is underway as well. Sources say Kiefer Sutherland is being approached for the lead, but former cast members such as Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, and Linda Gray may be reprising their roles in the new show. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Josh Holloway are possibilities for the younger generation

Sacha Baron Cohen (Bruno, Borat, Talladega Nights) has struck a deal to play Queen's front man Freddie Mercury in an film being scripted by Peter Morgan the British screen writer behind The Queen, Last King of Scotland, and Frost/Nixon. Now I know what you are thinking, "What!? The Borat guy is playing Freddie Mercury?" but hold up...before you grab your torches, Let us go back to another bio pic that cast a comedian.. Any one see that movie "Ray"? That got Jamie Fox an Oscar.. Now i am not saying that Sacha Baron Cohen is a front runner for an Oscar because of it, but in my opinion this could be that role he needs to really stretch his legs as an actor and gain a lot of respect doing it.. Now I got to say Queen has a little spot in my heart going back to my college days at a little bar called Scruffy Murphy's and their Karaoke Wednesdays were I would tear up some Bohemian Rhapsody after about 10 keystone lights..
